The best CD rate isn’t always for the CD you can open. Some of the highest certificate of deposit (CD) rates come from smaller banks or credit unions with membership or geographic restrictions that prevent you from opening an account.
While it’s CD Valet’s goal to provide savers with access to the most – and the highest – CD rates nationwide, we know it is frustrating when you spot a great CD that you can’t open.
There are ways to minimize your frustration, however. The easiest way to find the best CD you can actually open is to filter by your location, review eligibility requirements on the financial institution’s website, and compare CD rates only among institutions where you qualify. This guide explains how to do exactly that using CD Valet.
Use a CD Marketplace
You’ve done the smart thing: instead of settling for whatever rate your local bank offers, you came to CD Valet to see what’s really out there. Our marketplace includes nearly 40,000 CD rates from nearly 5,000 banks and credit unions – you at the right place to find the highest rates. And then right away, you spot it — a rate that’s noticeably higher than anything you’ve seen before.
Maybe it’s a credit union that only serves people who work for a specific employer three states away. Maybe it’s a bank that only opens accounts for residents of a handful of states – and yours isn’t one of them.
Why can’t everyone open every CD?
Here’s something worth understanding about how CDs actually work: not every financial institution can open an account for every person in the country. This isn’t a CD Valet limitation — it’s how banking and credit union regulation works.
None of this is a bait-and-switch. It’s simply how a nationwide marketplace of thousands of independent financial institutions works. And it’s exactly why CD Valet exists in the first place.
Why does CD Valet show restricted CD offers?
Some rate comparison sites quietly filter out anything with membership or geographic requirements, showing you a smaller list of CDs available nationwide or in a majority of the country. We don’t do that, and here’s why:
Our job is to make sure you never miss a great rate that does work for you. If we hid every credit union or regional bank rate by default, we’d also be hiding the rate that happens to be a perfect match for where you live or work. Someone in Ohio might not qualify for a credit union built for California teachers — but someone else reading this same article might be exactly for the saver who can benefit from that CD.
That’s the difference between a curated list and a real marketplace: CD Valet shows you the complete marketplace – tens of thousands of verified rates from banks and credit unions nationwide – and then let you filter down to what’s actually within reach.
So instead of narrowing what you see, we give you the tools to narrow down the offers yourself, based on your location. Beyond location, you need to visit the bank or credit union’s website to obtain detailed information about whether a CD is available to you. While CD Valet maintains eligibility information on our partner banks and credit unions (Featured Offer), we do not maintain that information on all of the approximately 5,000 banks and credit unions in our marketplace.
How to Filter for CDs You Can Open
Here’s how to use CD Valet’s tools to skip some of the guesswork.
Start with your location and choose your view.
- Use the state/location filter at the top of our rate tables to narrow results to institutions that serve your area. This immediately clears out most geographic-eligibility mismatches before you even start comparing rates. While you’re there, choose whether you’re browsing Featured CDs (our partner institutions, where we maintain detailed eligibility data) or All CDs (the full nationwide marketplace of nearly 5,000 institutions). Which view you pick changes how much eligibility detail you’ll see in the next step.

Under Featured CDs, check the CD Restriction tags on the listing.
Some CDs on CD Valet include a clickable “Restrictions” tag that provides details about CD eligibility requirements—for example, “Only available in select states.” This is the fastest way to scan a page and quickly determine which rates are available to you, saving time and helping you focus on offers you can qualify for.

Under All CDs, check the financial institution directly.
All CDs listings don’t display a Restrictions tag — but that doesn’t mean the CD is unrestricted. In fact, the majority of institutions in this broader view do have some eligibility requirements; it’s just not flagged on CD Valet. Click through to the bank or credit union’s website (or call them) to confirm eligibility before ruling a rate in or out.

Check who qualifies for a credit union CD.
Many credit unions have broader qualifying criteria than you’d expect — visit the website or call the credit union directly before ruling one out. Curious how membership eligibility actually works? We cover it here: Why Can’t I Get That Credit Union’s Rate?
Sort by rate within your filtered results.
Once you’ve filtered to institutions you qualify for, sort by APY to instantly see your best real options — no more sorting the entire nationwide list and hitting dead ends.

Use the map view to see what’s near you geographically.
If you’d rather browse visually, our Map Tool shows participating institutions by location — especially useful for community-chartered credit unions and regional banks where “near you” may be the qualifying factor. You can filter by financial institution type and term length, then hover over your state to see what’s available near you.
Set your ZIP code to find the best CDs near me, delivered to your inbox.
As a subscriber, sharing your ZIP code with CD Valet means you’ll get targeted email alerts whenever a competitive CD becomes available near you — so you don’t have to keep checking back.

The Bottom Line
The highest CD rate in the country doesn’t help you if you can’t open it. But somewhere in our list of tens of thousands of verified rates, there’s very likely a top-tier rate you can open today — you just need to filter smart, not settle small.
That’s the whole idea behind CD Valet: not just showing you the biggest number, but helping you find the biggest number that’s actually within your reach.
