2023: Year of the CD (Certificates of Deposit) Comeback

The Federal Reserve has been hiking federal funds rates since 2022 – a total of 11 rate hikes, a solution the central bank hopes can slow down the economy enough to moderate price growth.

In 2023, more financial institutions were offering CDs and competition continued to grow which has been good for savers.

quarterly cd rate growth

In 2023, the number of promo CDs (CDs outside of the standard 12-, 24-, 36-, 48-, and 60-month terms) available on CD Valet grew by 150%. While standard rates (rates with 12-, 24-, 36-, 48-, and 60-month terms) saw a 35% growth in available rates.

As the Fed is currently holding rates steady, it’s a good idea to shop the promos and grab a CD rate of 5% or more sooner rather than later.
