How Savers Find and Protect Yield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CD rates are rising faster than earlier this year, with increases accounting for 68 percent of rate changes May 1-May 31, 2026, on the CD Valet platform. That makes questions of when \u2014 and how long \u2014 to lock in CD yields more important now than at most times in recent banking history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50 percent to 3.75 percent after its June 16-17 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Policymakers and markets, however, have differing perspectives on where rates may go next. Inflation remains elevated relative to the Committee\u2019s 2 percent goal, due largely to conflict in the Middle East, while unemployment is stable and growth forecasts remain healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With inflation in recent years having pushed interest rates higher by hundreds of basis points, savers want to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is now the right time to use a certificate of deposit to lock in an interest rate \u2014 potentially for the long term?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What would a \u201cgood\u201d rate be if you did lock in funds in a time investment, such as CDs or U.S. Treasuries?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What maturity date most supports strong yield from a longer-term standpoint?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which deposit product most protects from the wide potential for higher or lower deposit rates?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protecting a strong and consistent yield over the course of one to two years is potentially more important than simply choosing the highest yield today. Here\u2019s why, according to recent economic data, and how the current offerings from banks and credit unions help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Today\u2019s Rates: A Look at the Listings on CD Valet<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some six-month and 12-month CDs currently beat comparable U.S. Treasury rates, according to CD Valet\u2019s Market Intelligence Tool. On July 1, a six-month U.S. Treasury yielded 4.00 percent, while a 12-month U.S. Treasury also yielded 4.00 percent. A 24-month U.S. Treasury yielded 4.17 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how that compares to offers available from banks and credit unions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three banks for six-month CDs \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Dolores-State-Bank\/636cf0109ee588ba90a6a61a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dolores State Bank, Colorado<\/span><\/a>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Rising-Bank\/65d6101ac259fb0ff52ed0ea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rising Bank, MIssouri<\/a><\/span>; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Bank-of-the-Orient\/636ceffb9ee588ba90a6a2c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bank of the Orient, California<\/a><\/span>\u2014 are now offering rates of 4.18 percent or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three credit unions for six-month CDs \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Internal-Revenue-F.C.U.\/636cf08c9ee588ba90a6ba82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Internal Revenue F.C.U., Louisiana<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Indiana-University-Credit-Union\/636cf08c9ee588ba90a6ba68\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indiana University Credit Union, Indiana<\/a><\/span>; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Louisville-Federal-Credit-Union\/636cf0959ee588ba90a6bbc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisville Federal Credit Union, Kentucky<\/a><\/span> \u2014 offer rates at or above 4.50 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 12-month CDs, the top three banks \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Community-Trust-Bank-Inc\/636cf00e9ee588ba90a6a58d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community Trust Bank Inc, Kentucky<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Raymond-James-Bank\/636cf0489ee588ba90a6aef9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raymond James Bank, Florida<\/a><\/span>; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Pioneer-Savings-Bank\/636cf0479ee588ba90a6ae7f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pioneer Savings Bank, Ohio<\/a><\/span>\u2014 are offering rates of 4.20 percent or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three credit unions for 12-month CDs \u2014 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Golden-Valley-Federal-Credit-Union\/636cf0829ee588ba90a6b91b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Golden Valley Federal Credit Union, California<\/a><\/span>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/A+-Federal-Credit-Union\/636cf05e9ee588ba90a6b2aa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A+ Federal Credit Union, Texas<\/a><\/span>; and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdvalet.com\/bankDetails\/Neches-Federal-Credit-Union\/636cf0a09ee588ba90a6bd7c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neches Federal Credit Union, Texas<\/a><\/span>; \u2014 offer rates at or above 4.65 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Visit CD Valet for the most current rates or to find rates available near you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s look at what recent economic data tells us about the likely future for deposit rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inflation: Still Moving Higher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inflation remains the central question for depositors because it continues to limit the Federal Reserve\u2019s ability to lower interest rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.5 percent in May, after rising 0.6 percent in April. Annual inflation is now at its highest level since April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy continued to drive much of the increase. The energy index rose 3.9 percent in May, after increasing 3.8 percent in April and 10.9 percent in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.2 percent in May and was up 2.9 percent from a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employment: Stable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The labor market remains steady, though job growth continues to show signs of moderation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the unemployment rate was unchanged in May at 4.3 percent. The unemployment rate has remained in a narrow range of 4.3 percent to 4.5 percent since July 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stable employment does not tend to point strongly toward lower interest rates, especially while inflation is rising. GDP forecasts indicate strength in the economy as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GDP: Solid Growth Forecast Moves Higher<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One June 17, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta\u2019s GDPNow model&#8217;s estimate for real GDP growth for the second quarter of 2026 came in at 3.0 percent on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, up from 2.8 percent on June 16. That slight increase came from stronger real personal consumption expenditures growth. As of July 1, 2026, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta\u2019s GDPNow model estimates real GDP growth for the second quarter of 2026 at 1.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom Line<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. economic data is not showing clear signals consistent with lower rates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inflation is rising again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unemployment remains stable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GDP forecasts suggest fairly strong growth ahead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>A perspective:<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For savers, the current rate outlook is unusually split.
